Pulmonary Embolism Misdiagnosis

The Law Offices of Raymond J. Slomski, P.C., combines the work of experienced attorneys and support staff to help clients pursue medical malpractice claims in Arizona courts.

Since our law firm’s inception in 1988, we have handled hundreds of cases and helped our clients achieve approximately $100 million in jury verdicts and settlements due to personal injury and medical malpractice. Among the many medical malpractice cases we handle are claims involving pulmonary embolism misdiagnosis and related errors.

About Pulmonary Embolism

Pulmonary embolism is a common but potentially deadly condition that affects people from all age groups. It occurs when an artery to the lung becomes blocked — usually by a blood clot traveling from another part of the body.

Most blood clots begin in the legs, but they may also form in veins throughout the body. Blood clots causing pulmonary embolism have also been known to form at the tip of a catheter placed in a vein.

If a doctor expects that a pulmonary embolism exists, prompt diagnosis and treatment are critical. Ultrasound and CT scanning are often needed to confirm the diagnosis. Without a rapid response, the pulmonary embolism may be fatal. If detected in time, treatment with anti-clotting medications can greatly reduce the risk of death.

While not every bad outcome warrants a lawsuit, in some instances failure to prevent, detect and properly treat pulmonary embolism is considered medical malpractice. This is especially true in emergency rooms and hospitals, where medical professionals receive special training to detect such emergency conditions.

When patients undergo surgery, special measures must be taken to prevent blood clots. These include placing the patient on anti-coagulants after some surgeries, as well as use of special medical equipment designed to prevent clotting.
