What is a stroke?
Stroke is what happens when the blood flow to a region of the brain is cut off. Often, this is a result of a clot in the brain. When the blood flow is cut off, that area of brain becomes oxygen deprived and begins to die. In stroke cases, time is of the essence – the faster the stroke is treated from its onset, the better the outcome is, generally. Stroke can be recognized by a mnemonic called FAST. The acronym lists the general symptoms of stroke, and notes the importance of a quick reaction. FAST stands for Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties and Time. If you or a loved one is experiencing these symptoms, call 911 immediately.
What Are The treatments for stroke?
There are several different types of treatment for stroke, ranging from drug therapy to surgical intervention. A potentially life-saving drug called tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) can only be given if you or your loved one arrives at the hospital within 3-4 hours of the onset of the first symptoms of stroke. Other potentially life-saving treatments are called a Thrombectomy or an Embolectomy. In these surgical procedures, a device is placed within the blood vessel being blocked, the device moves through the clot, takes hold of the clot and is removed.
